Botox Q & A

How does Botox work?

Botox is a medication derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, a microbe that produces a neurotoxin that can be safely injected into certain muscles in diluted amounts. When injected, the toxin weakens the targeted muscles and blocks the signals that are sent from your nerves to your muscles. When injected into the face, your wrinkles relax and soften because your facial muscles can’t contract normally.

Your physician can provide Botox to address several cosmetic concerns, such as:

  • Scarring
  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines

Botox is provided as a quick in-office treatment that only takes a few minutes and requires no anesthesia. At Independent Medical Group, your provider injects Botox with a fine needle. There might be some mild and tolerable discomfort, but most people tolerate the procedure without any difficulties.

Who is a good candidate for Botox?

Most healthy adults are suitable candidates for Botox. Your provider can answer your questions during your consultation, where they also provide you with detailed information and help you decide on the best aesthetic treatments for you.

If you’re a good candidate for Botox, before your treatment, you should avoid alcohol for a few days, and aspirin for two weeks, to reduce any possible bruising.

If you have a neurological disease or are pregnant or breastfeeding, you’re not a good candidate for Botox.

What can I expect after Botox injections?

After your Botox treatment, there’s no downtime, and you can immediately return to your daily activities. Most people don’t have any symptoms. You might experience a mild headache that subsides shortly or mild bruising that typically resolves within a day or two.

Make sure you don’t rub or irritate the treated area for 12 hours after your treatment.

It can take three days to one week to produce the full results from your Botox treatment, and the effects can last four months or longer.

Your muscle function returns over time, and your wrinkles might return. Additional treatments can help you to maintain your desired look and smoother skin. Even though wrinkles can come back with Botox, they’re never usually as noticeable and visible as they were previously.
