PRP Q & A

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an increasingly popular alternative to medications, cosmetic injectables, and other treatments for various purposes. Unlike traditional injectables and drugs, the PRP in your treatment comes from your own body.

Your provider at Independent Medical Group draws a sample of blood from your vein and processes it in a twirling machine called a centrifuge. The centrifugal force causes the blood to separate into layers. One layer includes plasma, which is the liquid part of your blood, and platelets.

Without red and white blood cells, your platelets and plasma can enhance cell regeneration in certain areas where you inject them. Platelets release growth factors to communicate with each other for efficient tissue damage repair. PRP has an increasing number of applications in medicine, several of which are available at Independent Medical Group.

Which treatments are available using PRP?

Independent Medical Group uses PRP for a few different purposes. PRP is particularly effective in aesthetic treatments, which aim to improve or enhance your appearance in some way. Your provider can help you choose between these PRP treatment options:

PRP for hair loss

If you’re losing hair at a fast enough rate to form bald spots, PRP injections in your scalp are an option for treatment. The platelets help stimulate the repair process for follicles that are struggling to grow hair.

Vampire Facial®

The Vampire Facial involves a microneedling procedure with PRP. During the facial, a series of very fine needles creates needlepoint injuries in your skin. Your provider infuses the PRP into these microchannels to penetrate deep into your skin and repair features like scars, spots, and large pores.

Vampire Facelift®

The Vampire Facelift is similar to the Vampire Facial but not exactly the same. Your provider combines the PRP with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to add volume to certain parts of your face while stimulating new collagen growth. With the Vampire Facelift, you can plump your cheeks, plump your lips, reduce large wrinkles, and improve your face’s symmetry.

Erectile Dysfunction

If you’re having difficulty getting and maintaining an erection for sexual intercourse, PRP injections can be an effective form of treatment. The platelets present in your plasma encourage the development of healthy tissue and blood vessels in your penis, which can ultimately improve the quality of your erections.

Are PRP treatments safe?

PRP is particularly safe because it comes from your own body. While comparable medications aren’t necessarily unsafe because they come from elsewhere, your body is highly unlikely to reject the PRP and react negatively.
